With so much happening across the sector we want to provide a quick digest of developments we come across during the week. In a given week this could include wholesale market events, news articles, blogs, regulatory developments, academic articles or podcasts.

Roadmap release

In this Weekly Dispatch:

  1. ARENA published the National V2G strategy featuring Endgame’s modelling.
  2. The CEC published their quarterly investment report in renewable generation and storage. Stating that financial commitments were made for 4.3 GW of new renewable capacity last year.
  3. AEMO released the December 2024 quarterly connections scorecard. 3.6GW of new connection applications were received.
  4. European natural gas prices soar with speculations of a price cap.
  5. Podcast of the week: The Catalyst chat about data centers and co-locating with generation.
  6. This week in NEM history: Eight years ago this week operational demand reached 14,087 MW in NSW when NSW sweltered through a 43 degree heatwave. As we approach the end of summer we have seen operational demand barely exceeding 12,463 MW in NSW. 

H2 Woes

  2. The Queensland Government announced that it would not provide any further funding to support Stanwell’s CQ-H2 project.

  4. Potentia Energy secures 1.2GW renewable energy portfolio in Australia.

The Labor and the Trump

  1. The Essential Services Commission released its draft decision on the 2025-2026 minimum feed-in tariff, which is 0.04 cents per kilowatt hour.
  2. Storms hit NSW with 130,000 people without power.
  3. The AEMC has decided to allow South Australia to consider two additional power stations – Snuggery and Port Lincoln – as emergency backup power sources if needed.
  4. The UAE announces a new renewable energy facility capable of delivering 1GW of clean power uninterruptedly.
  5. Adamantem is investing in a solar-focused embedded network developer Microgrid Power.
  6. Podcast of the week: Bloomberg chats about the gas outlook and energy security.  

Running on Empty

  1. The ACCC produced an interim update on the East Coast gas market, highlighting that if investment is not made, there will be shortfalls in the future.
  2. Wholesale electricity prices roughly doubled in the December quarter in NSW and QLD compared to the previous year.
  3. More than 400,000 households are without power due to the fires in California.
  4. The world’s first 300MW compressed air energy storage plant is fully operational in China.

  1. The South Australian government released their Electricity Development Plan which features our modelling.
  2. The AER released a report on the performance of the wholesale electricity market in 2024.
  3. The federal government approved HumeLink which will connect Snowy 2.0 to the grid.
  4. The AEMC made a final rule that allows aggregated CER to be dispatchable in the NEM.
  5. Workers earning less than $100,000 a year can buy EVs using low-interest loans.

  3. The CSIRO released their draft report on GenCosts for 2024-2025.
  4. AEMO released their draft 2025 inputs assumptions and scenarios report.
  5. The Danish Energy Agency’s latest offer for new offshore wind capacity in the North Sea drew no bids.

Reviews, Reliability and Retailers

In this Weekly Dispatch:

  1. AEMO warns consumers about potential blackouts due to a heatwave.
  2. The federal government has announced a review of the NEM’s wholesale market settings considering the design of the market post-2030.
  3. According to the Climate Change Authority Australia isn’t in progress to achieve the 2030 emissions goal and it needs to fall by 15 Mt CO2e each year (it fell by 3 Mt in FY 2024).
  4. The AEMC released their analysis of residential electricity trends and estimates that prices could be 13% lower in ten years’ time if the transition proceeds as AEMO expects.
  5. Retailers now need to receive customer consent to change their retail tariff after getting a smart meter installed on their premises.
